Website Design Tips You Can Use

Web design is a great way to make money. Web designers create websites for themselves and for others. Website design gives you the flexibility of being your own boss and make money.

As you construct your site, be conscious of the colors you use together. You want to make sure that your text is easily visible against your background colors. The better choice is using darker fonts against backgrounds that are lighter. Let your friends see your color scheme to get their input.

Always mark files that must be opened in an external program with an icon. Many sites host PDF files, and less commonly, DOC files, that must be opened in Foxit Reader and Microsoft Word/OpenOffice, respectively. These files should be marked with an icon representing the file type, and a link to download the appropriate viewer if the user does not have it.

Let people cancel any action they have started. For example, allow users to cancel registration for newsletters or easily back out of a search. If your visitors can't easily change their mind and back out of registering for a site feature, they may feel forced to complete a transaction. This isn't good for your web traffic or your reputation.

To help you design a more professional looking site, do not include an image in the page background. A background image screams low quality site, plus these site usually take forever to load. When you are going for a more professional look, the last thing you want is your visitors waiting forever because images are still loading on your pages.

Provide a navigation menu on every page of your site. While this menu does not have to link every single page of your site, as this could be an exhaustive list if you have a very large site, it should provide links to the main pages. This ensures that your visitors do not have to return to the home page and start completely over when it is not necessary.

Organize your links and avoid putting too many links in one area of your site. Doing this can confuse visitors and make them leave your site. If you do have many low- to mid-importance links, emulate the "blogrolls" seen in many blogs and tuck them away in a column on the right side of the page.

Don't install pop-up adverts on your website. These ads are always alluring with the promise of making extra profits; however, most visitors find them highly annoying. Pop-ups will cause people to go elsewhere. Keep ads small and unobtrusive.

Always make sure that your site design works well on every browser. Your coding might look great in Firefox, but it could be askew in Internet Explorer. You need to find out exactly how things look in all browsers and then code in a way that leaves your site looking the same on every popular browser.
